Winter Damaged Pasture
The records show that the whole of New Zealand has suffered one of the wettest, coldest winters for several years, some say 50! Looking around the countryside I wouldn't think there would be many farmers that don't have some paddocks that aren't damaged.
Specialty Seeds have a wide range of
pasture seed mixes suitable to repair your paddocks, whether you are feeding
sheep,
beef,
dairy,
deer,
goats,
horses,
alpacas or anything in between. They range in prices from $75 + gst per hectare, up to $250 + gst per hectare.
One of the most popular mixes we offer is our "
Generator Value Pack". We designed this mix a couple of seasons ago for our clients who wanted excellent production but at a low cost per hectare. It has been very successful over a wide range of locations throughout New Zealand.

**New Product Spitfire Rape**
Last Autumn Specialty Seed's had a small quantity of Agricom's new Forage Brassica which is now known as
Spitfire. We have been very impressed with Spitfire and our observations have been backed up with some excellent trial results. Spitfire can be sown from Spring until early Autumn. It is quick to mature (13-14 weeks), has excellent re-growth ability and has a very low DM% stem. These features mean you will get very good utilisation from Spitfire.
The other major benefit that Spitfire has over other rapes is it's
very good aphid resistance. Aphids are a significant pest in many cultivars of rape. They can reduce potential yields and are expensive to control. Our North Island clients can have particularly bad problems with aphids so to have a cultivar that shows vastly improved resistance to them is a real advantage for you.

Cleancrop - HT brassica
Last month, both Chris and I attended a training session to gain an accreditation that will enable us to sell the new HT Brassica's due for full commercial release in 2011. HT Brassicas were developed using traditional plant breeding techniques and are special as they contain a single gene within them that makes them tolerant of the
Sulfonyl Urea herbicide from DuPont
TM called Telar®. Telar® is a chemical that is absorbed through both the foliage and roots of a wide range of weeds found commonly in New Zealand.
There are a few different types of high performing HT brassicas due to be released in 2011 including a:
HT Rape,
HT Bulb Turnip and
HT Leafy Turnip.
In 2012 it is hoped that an
HT Swede will be released with work on a
HT Kale continuing.
The HT Brassica technology will add value in high weed infested areas and simplify weed control on economically important and difficult to control weeds.
Trial sites wanted.
We may have access to a very limited release of HT Brassica's for this coming spring. If you are planning a brassica crop in an area of very high weed infestation please
contact us.
