Greenfeed Oats
We talked last issue about just how quickly oats can grow at this time of year. They should only be considered where you are looking for a single graze option. Mixing with
Devour or
Kano ryegrasses will make sure they can be multigrazed into the spring however.

Triticale Information
Triticale is a cross between wheat and ryecorn and is suitable for a wide range of soil types and fertility situations.
The first triticale we are talking about today can be drilled now and used for winter grazing and then shut up for spring silage, while the other is better drilled now and used as a spring whole crop cereal silage. Both these triticale's have been selected to perform however to get the most from them your management needs to be carefully planned.

DoubleTake Triticale
Suitable for autumn (March) to mid winter sowings, DoubleTake has lower growing points than other triticale's and because of this it recovers well from grazing and is slower to develop so therefore gives it a wider window of opportunity at harvest time. DoubleTake is ideal for a winter graze and then followed by spring whole crop cereal silage harvest. Care must be taken if using Doubletake for a winter grazing option not to overgraze or pug as this will have a major effect on the spring silage cut.
DoubleTake has been on the market for several years and has a proven track record over a wide range of soil types and locations.

Prophet Triticale
New product for this season Prophet can be sown from early autumn (March) until mid winter (June). Prophet if sown early enough can be winter grazed like Doubletake however Doubletake is still the preferred cultivar if you are sowing at this time of year for this dual purpose role.
Prophet is slower to establish than Doubletake and is more densely tillared, good disease resistance and larger seed heads making ideal as a silage triticale. Prophet has also displayed very good carbohydrate and metabolisable energy values.
