Issue 76 / Winter / July 2016
Hi [firstname]
Welcome to the July 2016 SeedData newsletter.
I trust the Winter is treating you well thus far.
It certainly appears that this Winter, to date, has been a good one for most of us who make a living from the land. The ski industry (also making a living from the land) may beg to differ however.
In this month's edition I would like to take time to congratulate one of our clients, talk about a new swede coming on the market, and look at two new sugar beets.
Please browse these topics below:
Well done Althol - Winner of Young Farmer of the Year!
All the team at Specialty Seeds would like to take this opportunity to congratulate one of our clients who recently won the FMG Young Farmer of the year.
Athol who hails from Kamo, Northland and didn't come from a traditional farming background now runs one of Purata Farms properties at Dunsandel, Central Canterbury, supplying Synlait Milk.
In this senior role Althol has a staff of 10 to manage.
This is the second year in a row the winner of this prestigious competition has come from the Canterbury region with the 2015 winner Mathew Bell hailing from Hinds.
Athol showed a vast array of skills to win this year taking away $80,000 in prizes, however as Athol and his wife Jane are expecting their first baby in October there won't be much time to dwell on things for too long.
Read what they have had to say in the media:

New Swede cultivar looks impressive.
PGG Wrightsons Seeds are happy to announce the release of their new swede called Clutha Gold.
Clutha Gold is a New Zealand bred cultivar from Forage Innovations plant breeding joint venture between Plant and Food Research and PGG Wrightsons Seeds.
It was selected as a replacement for the very successful Aparima Gold and meet all the breeding objectives to achieve this.
Clutha Gold is a yellow fleshed bulb type, medium maturity with 170 - 250 days to grazing and has excellent keeping qualities.
It was selected for improved tolerance to powdery mildew, clubroot and dry rot.
In a series of trials conducted in both Gore and Methvin during 2012, 2013 and 2014 Clutha Gold showed significant yield advantages over Aparima Gold while maintaining its above mentioned diseases tolerances Clutha Gold is suitable for all the traditional uses of a swede crop including sheep, cattle and deer.
Clutha Gold will be available in the Ultrastrike coated form this coming spring and should you want more information on it please feel free to contact us.

More sugar beet seed options.
New to the New Zealand market this year in limited numbers are two sugar beet varieties called Gellert and Rex.
The sugar beet market is slowly gaining strength in New Zealand so the arrival into the market of these two cultivars is very welcome.
Both cultivars come from the Strube International seed company that is known for its excellent sugar beets, wheat, rye and sunflower seed breeding programs and sales Strube is recognized as a truly global seed company.
Strube has been selecting sugar beet and cereals since 1877 and the focus of their work is to meet the needs of our customers - farmers from around world.
Modern sugar beet varieties are high-tech products. Within the seed is the combined expertise and experience gained from many years of research and trials, biotechnology and genome research, seed propagation and production, seed quality research, refinement and pesticide research.
And the performance of both Rex and Gellert reflect this.
Both Gellert and Rex have considerable bulb uniformity with yields ranging between 14 tonne per hectare up to 20 tonne DM per hectare in recent local trials. Both come in 1 hectare boxes each containing 100,000 pelleted seeds.
Gellert sugar beet
- In recent New Zealand trials Gellert had the highest bulb yield and bulb DM% of the seven cultivars trialed that were harvested 251 days after planting.
- In these trials Gellert had an average bulb dry matter % of between 20.72 - 23.59%.
- Gellert has a dense dark green canopy with minimal incidence of rust.
Rex sugar beet
- After 251 days Rex had a statistically equal bulb yield to Gellert putting it in the top yielding category.
- Rex accumulated its bulb yield and DM% early than other cultivars (highest at 169 and 204 days after planting) which will increase its lifting flexibility for earlier lifting.
- Lighter green in canopy colour than Gellert with less leaf density as well, another desirable lifting trait.
As mentioned there will be limited release of Gellert and Rex so please feel free to contact us should you have any questions on these great new cultivars.
