Issue 81 / Summer / January 2017
Hi [firstname]
Welcome to the first SeedData newsletter for 2017.
I trust this newsletter finds you all rested, well, and ready to launch into the new year with great gusto, as the writer is.
It always seems slightly unfair that while most of New Zealand's population has a well-earned break, for those of us involved in farming, it's often up there with one of the busiest times of the year.
However, that said you do need to make hay while the sun shines, and there certainly has been a tremendous amount of silage made recently! Always a good thing as one never knows when you will need it.
In this month's newsletter, we talk about some cheaper sow down options for our clients (we believe there will be a great demand for a quality seed mix at this cost) and we also look at some brand new products set to be released following harvest 2017.
Please browse these topics below:
Cheaper sow down options working well.
During the last few years we have had a lot of interest in providing our clients with a truly good value pasture seed mix.
These enquiries come from clients who are looking for a top producing perennial ryegrass and white clover mix that fills the gap between the very cheap rye/clover mix and the more expensive top of the line mixes.
We do of course have both the cheaper rye/clover mix, as well as providing top of the range blends.
In fact, as we keep saying, if a seed is commercially available we can source it for you.
However, every year we get approached by our clients who are looking for an intermediate cost blend, while not compromising production. This of course provides us with a challenge!
Over the last few years we have managed to do so, as we often find willing seed companies who for whatever reason wish to sell some of their top perennial grasses at a reasonable price.
The buying power we offer makes the cheaper blends possible, and so we can pass these cost savings onto you, our clients!
We keep the cultivar we are using confidential between us and the seed supplier for obvious reasons and are very particular when selecting the grass and carefully check its production and quality before we put our name to it.
Breeder B mix
We call this mix our Breeder B mix, and this coming Autumn it's using a diploid perennial ryegrass that we feel is the best we have ever manged to get access to.
The perennial ryegrass we will be using this autumn was breed in New Zealand and has an excellent purity and germination.
Specialty Seeds is very familiar with this cultivar and we are very excited to bring this offer to our clients.
The Breeders B mix is a blend of 21 kgs of the diploid perennial ryegrass, mixed with 2 kgs of a medium leaf clover and 2 kgs of a large leaf clover, making the mix a total of 25 kgs per hectare.
Should you be looking, we have excellent stocks of this mix for this coming Autumn and welcome any enquiry you may have.

New products coming out soon.
The following is a quick update of some of the new products that will be released ex harvest 2017.
As always until it's been harvested and safely in store we can't really say how much will be available. With that caveat in mind here we go:
Mainstar forage brassica:
Ever since we have been in business we have always sold a lot of Winfred forage rape. Over the years it has built up a justified reputation as a very reliable forage rape.
It's performance on dry land farms, it's multi graze ability and stock acceptability has seen Winfred become the first and only choice for many farmers.
Mainstar forage rape is set to eventually, over the next two - three years (as seed stock builds up) to replace Winfred.
This season will see a very limited release of Mainstar and we will be following its performance with great interest. It is going to be a very hard act to follow... watch this space.
Mantra large leaf white clover:
I have been watching Cropmark's clover breeding program for many years now.
It's great to see this expensive and time consuming program start to bear fruit, with the release of this new clover.
Mantra is the first true large-leaf clover bred by Cropmark Seeds.
Mantra has the following characteristics:
- a semi-erect growth habit
- good disease tolerance
- and a potentially high dry matter yield
- is a mid-flowering type with a high stolon density for a large leaf clover type.
Kainui cocksfoot:
Although Kainui has been on the scene for a couple of years many of our clients haven't heard much about this very good new cocksfoot.
We are also happy to see the seed stocks build up to a level where we can suggest more of it to our clients.
Kainui can be used either as:
- a specialist permanent pasture in summer-dry prone regions, and can be sown with clover and/or plantain and chicory
- or alternatively, the inclusion of 1-2kg/ha of Kainui cocksfoot, in mixes with ryegrass and white clover aids summer production
With its strong root structure, Kainui is able to mine water more efficiently, providing better summer-dry growth. It is high yielding and compatible with ryegrass in pasture mixes.

Sad footnote.
It's been a bitter sweet Christmas/ New Year period for us at Specialty Seeds.
While we were enjoying fun with our families this year, we were rocked with the sudden and unexpected passing of a dear friend and trusted advisor to us.
Philip Hyde has been our company's accountant since almost the first day we started up in business.
In fact we bumped into Philip when both him and ourselves were looking to buy office furniture as he too was starting up his new accounting business, over 22 years ago.
Philips advice and professional manner has been of great support to us.
Philip was raised on a farm in North Canterbury, worked at Dalgetys and had many farmer clients so Philip also had a great understanding of our business.
Philip was more than just our accountant he was our friend and both himself and Robyn, his wife, attended all our Xmas parties and other social events.
Philip was survived by Robyn and three sons.
We will forever miss his broad ever present smile, humour and friendship.
RIP Philip.
