Exirel - New Insecticide from DuPont
One of the biggest issues that face a great amount of you at this time of year is the controlling insects in your brassica crops.
The main insect pests are Diamondback Moth (DBM), Cabbage white butterfly and Grey cabbage aphids. All of these insect pests have been typically difficult to control in brassicas.
This has often meant poor control leading to repeat applications and potential for insect resistance to some of the more commonly used chemicals.
During the last couple of years I have been keeping an eye on a new insecticide from DuPont and was happy to be informed of its release for this coming season.
Exirel
Exirel is not only effective in the control and/or suppression of most of these important pests but also has lower impact on the beneficial insects which in turn help in better insect control in the crops, so basically a win, win.
Other features of Exirel are its rapid feeding cessation, impact on multiple life stages including pest reproduction and Translaminar activity and local translocation.
Exirel has a very low use per hectare rate and in the case of high aphid populations can be mixed with a specialised aphid insecticide.
As is the case with most modern chemistry Exirel is best when used early in the target pest's infestation and early in the crop cycle. Therefore crop inspections from 30 days post emergence is a very important part of brassica crop management.
Exirel is registered in Fodder brassica crops including Kale, Rape, Swede, Leafy turnip and Bulb turnips. For more information on this very impressive new product please click on the links below:

Giant White Butterflys found in Nelson
The great white butterfly (Pieris brassicae) is a new pest to New Zealand that poses a major economic and environmental threat.
It was discovered in a Nelson garden by a very alert member of the public. Giant white butterflies are a significant pest on brassica crops such as cabbage, broccoli and swedes.
There could be a breeding population in Nelson after possibly arriving on furniture or in a container or something similar.
Of concern is the fact that the Giant white butterfly is closely related to the very common and damaging white butterfly that appears to do very well in most New Zealand regions.
It is still unknown if current management practices for the white butterfly will apply to the Giant white butterfly.
Click on the image or the link below for a description on what to look for and what action to take should you discover anything out of the normal on your brassica crops this coming season.
