Issue 23 / Summer / December 2011
Hi #subname#
Welcome to the December edition of Specialty Seed's SeedData Newsletter.
To everyones delight our almost perfect season appears to be carrying on throughout the majority of New Zealand. Just when the strong winds were starting to dry things out in Canterbury, we received another good rain. Our local arable clients have referred to the last lot we had recently as a "multi million dollar rainfall".
As per Murphys Law, this rain fell over the two days I had set aside for crop inspections. I have seen most of New Zealand and a bit of Australia over the last month and not only does the country side look good but our farmers are all smiles. A fantastic way to head into the festive season!
The Specialty Seed's team, Stephen, David, Chris, Peter, Jarred, and Ben, would like to thank all of our clients for their support during 2011.
We wish you and your families a safe and enjoyable Christmas & New Year period and we look forward to hearing from you in the new year.
In this edition:
Merry Christmas.

Honey Bee Care.
Honey bees are critical for horticulture and agriculture in New Zealand and around the world. I have recently received an informative booklet entitled 'Honey Bee Care - challenges and solutions".
The booklet addresses issues relating to honey bee health and discusses measures taken to assess and manage the safety to bees of crop protection products, including seed treatment insecticides.
If you are interested in receiving a copy of the free, fact packed and easy to read booklet please contact us.

Crickoff Pro Cricket Bait.
Now is the time of year that farmers in from the Waikato and up throughour the Northland area start to see large numbers of Black Field Crickets starting to come out of the ground and attack their valuable pastures again.
Our sister company Pest Go released "Crick Off Pro" last year with excellent results. Farmers loved being able to buy a product straight off the shelf that was ready to spread, saving them the job where they previously had to mix the wheat and smelly chemicals together.
Background Information:
Pest Go was formed to sell a wide range of good quality pest control products throughout New Zealand at competitive prices.
We currently have three new products in the pipeline and we will be keeping you informed with their progress over the next few months. Until then feel free to go to www.pestgo.co.nz

Blitz Tetraploid Ryegrass.
Blitz Tetraploid Ryegrass is the most perennial cultivar we sell and has all the high feed quality typical of a tetraploid ryegrass. Blitz is a medium tillared cultivar making it very clover friendly and its late flowering trait ensures it retains its leaf quality right through the silage making season.
As you will see Blitz which typically lasts for 3-5 years works in well with our ever popular Devour annual rye (which can last for 9-10 months) and Kano Italian ryegrass (lasting typically 15-24 months).
Blitz is also a component in our increasingly popular Generator Value Pasture Seed Blend but it can also be sown alone.
We sold out of Blitz last year so are keenly awaiting the new season crop to come on stream sometime around mid February.

Generator 'Non Rye' Horse Pasture Seed Mix.
Since Specialty Seeds was formed we have had a stream of clients asking us for our opinion on what would be a suitable pasture mix for their horses. Typically horses are grazed on ryegrass and clover based pastures and these tend to create health related issues from time to time.
After studying up on horse nutrition requirements and consulting with many industry people we came up with our Generator 'Non Rye' Horse Pasture seed blend.
This horse specific blend is designed to be more in tune with a horses nutritional requirements, and therefore contains no ryegrass or clover. It is a blend of deep rooting summer performing, high in fibre, cultivars that survive New Zealand's tough climate and most importantly contain no harmful endophytes. Cultivars within the mix also can perform well in medium to low fertility situations.
We also realised that many end users of this now very popular blend may have little experience in establishing and managing new pastures.
Therefore our brochure not only fully describes the benefits of this mix but also contains tips on establishment and early pasture management.
